Food photography inspiration
News.HOW TO FIND INSPIRATION AND PHOTOGRAPH BRANDS IN A MEMORABLE WAY?
I was thrilled to be commissioned by Lidl to produce a set of fun and conceptual key visuals as part of their rebranding for a future new store opening events. The brief for this set of photos was to create impactful food images which communicated Lidl’s brand message on quality, health and surprise.
Finding new ways to shoot food is something that I'm constantly thinking about. How do you present an everyday food item in a way that people have never seen before? It's tough right!?
I often look outside the photography realm for inspiration. Music, literature, art, and film can be great resources to trigger original ideas and concepts. But what is it I look for in these art forms?
For me, it could be the lighting used to enhance a particular scene in a film. Lyrics from a song or how textures or colours are used in piece of art. These all feed my curiosity and create a little spark to get me started on an idea.
The right image of a #CocaCola bottle was heavily influenced by the lighting used in Lord of the Rings and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
This series I shot recently, draws influences from some of my favourite childhood movies and books. I've attempted to show food and brands in a bold and fun way. Placing the subject out of its normal surroundings can instantly create interesting contrasts - making it unfamiliar thus grabbing an audience's attention.
Adding a touch of fun/humour when done right can make images timeless. Think of your favourite TV adverts for example, do any of those use humour? I bet some of them do.
Brands often use humour in their advertisements as it creates an instant emotional reaction, and gets people talking about it. Look at the Super Bowl adverts for example, it's possibly the most watched television broadcast in the world, brands spend millions just to get a slot to air their 30 sec ad. Some of most memorable ads ever created premier here and they tend to always have a fun/humorous side.
Some great examples of this here
